Simulation for healthcare students is huge. But what happens when you’re a student who needs more practice? What if your sim lab has limited hours and you just don’t feel prepared? Don’t worry, we’re here to help.
We’ve compiled a list of simulation resources for students below. While these obviously don’t replace a high fidelity simulation setting, they will give you a little bit more confidence and practice without draining your bank account.
Free Simulation Resources for Students:
1️⃣ Nursing Simulation Scenarios by Montgomery College
This list of free YouTube videos are filmed in realistic settings or sim labs with actors, and occasionally manikins. Everything from how to handle disparaging comments, to the roles of different professionals during a Code Blue are discussed. Make sure to have a pen and paper with you so you can follow along and take notes during the videos. Pause them regularly and quiz yourself “what would I do next? How would I handle this situation?” and then review your notes after.
2️⃣ CAN Sim Games
“Games” is a bit of a misnomer since most of these are set up as free virtual simulations. While they were designed for nurses, we think a lot of the simulations are relevant to both pre-hospital providers and medical providers. For example, the games on Sexual Orientation, Public Health, and Vaccine conversations are ideal for NPs and Medical students who will be directing patient care or discussing diagnoses and treatment with patients. Essential Skills for Healthcare Workers and Wound Management are more geared towards nursing students. If you can’t get enough of the free activities, there are more simulations behind a paywall, but with all the free content, you should have plenty to keep you busy!
3️⃣ ECG Simulator
Unlike the other resources that cover a broad range of material, this is a simulator for one thing and one thing only: the dreaded ECG. Becoming an expert in how to interpret ECGs is a difficult skill to acquire and if you’re about to take an ACLS test, you’re probably looking for extra practice. If so, this free simulator is the tool you need!
4️⃣ And our favorite: ChartFlow free patient scenarios.
We may not have a virtual hospital you can enter with a VR headset, but we do have an EHR full of patient scenarios. Check out our free course to review patient charts, make decisions, and decide what to do next. Then, chart your actions and review them afterwards with classmates or a teacher. We have pre-made courses for both Nursing and EMT students at this time.
