Before you can start doing simulations, your students need to understand hand hygiene and PPE. That’s why we’re releasing a free lesson plan to get you started.
Teaching hand hygiene can be tricky — sometimes it’s totally forgotten, sometimes it’s the only thing we emphasize. This all-important skill should always be introduced in a skills lab before healthcare students ever get a chance to enter the lab. But how?
We suggest using this 45 minute-1 hour activity. It can be completed in your lab or classroom and all you need is a projector or Smart Board to show a few instructional videos and enough gloves and gowns for all of your students. You can use this activity for any pre-licensure healthcare student including CNA, LPN, RN, MA-C, CMA, and HHA programs.

Before each skill (hand washing, donning and doffing gloves and gown, and hand washing with hand sanitizer), we suggest using instructional videos to demonstrate proper technique so you don’t need to perfect your own demonstration.

WHO video on handwashing technique
Donning and Doffing PPE
Cleveland Clinic video on removing gloves properly
WHO describes how to use hand sanitizer correctly
After each video, have your students practice the specific skill. Make sure to walk around the room and answer any questions or correct any students who are having trouble with using proper technique.
Pro Tip: Provide an unscented, hypoallergenic lotion for students to use if their hands are dry after practicing hand washing.
