As the MCAT looms nearer, it’s normal to panic. For many students, this is the first time taking such an intense, day-long, make-or-break exam. That’s why practice is key and we know most students are just trying to pay off their student loans and save enough money for med school applications, so we took the time to compile all the free MCAT study resources we could. In addition to the resources below, “question of the day” mailing lists are becoming popular, and although it’s tempting to dismiss these as silly, we suggest signing up for every single question of every single day. Why? Pretty soon you’ll be getting 10 test prep questions a day and if you do them every night before bed, you’ll be ready for that exam without needing to do a ton of extra work.
Below are a list of lectures, practice MCAT questions, and study games to use for exam preparation.
- Blueprint - Blueprint has a bit of everything for free: Practice exams, study planner, content checklist, a question of the day, and flashcards. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive product for zero cost, we highly recommend starting here.
- Varsity Tutors - The downside of this site is that you’ll have to scroll past ad images to get to the content. The upside is the massive amount of questions, explanations, and flashcards you’ll find here. Like most sites on this list, you can also sign up for the question of the day.
- MCAT self prep - This site has a free e-course with videos and text descriptions. Included are over 300 sample questions to help you solidify and test your knowledge. As a bonus, we find the design of this product really easy to navigate and pleasing to look at.
- Princeton Review - Princeton Review seems to make their money from [expensive] application prep services so while they do have some MCAT prep materials for free, you’ll most likely get some spam emails after signing up. However, access to a free exam, diagnostic questions to see what subjects you need to practice, and a free biology prep course is worth a few emails.
- MedGames.io - This is a good supplement site when you get into biochemistry. Play drag-and-drop games to remember complicated pathways instead of just reviewing endless numbers of flashcards.
- Khan Academy - Khan academy has a series of videos with example passages and a handful of review questions in their MCAT prep series. This series has been supported by the AAMC until 2026 so use it while it’s up!
- AAMC - The AAMC provides a free sample test and a free official practice exam. You need to create a free account using your email, but once you do that you’ll see the options below. Be aware that they do have many bundles that they charge for, but the exams and items listed under “free resources” are available without paying.
- Kaplan - Kaplan offers a free MCAT practice test and “prep” package. The main use for this package is to get access to some of their realistic practice questions that can give you more experience test-taking and also help you decide if you want to pay for their products in the future.
We also have a ton of free pre-med study resources on the way if you need a little help getting through your classes. You can find those listed on this blog post.
